This is because some of the planets, the outer planets, move very slowly, unlike the Sun which appears in a different sign of the zodiac every month.

These outer planets can take a year or more to travel the same distance.

The planets that affect us the most on a daily basis are the Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus. These planets are often known as the personality planets.

In comparison to the outer planets: Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, the personality planets are relatively fast moving. The ripple effect of their movement as they rotate in space and form configurations with one another, is what we experience and feel in our lives.

Everything in the universe is energy of one form or another. Everything can be examined under a microscope and be broken down into molecules and atoms, and beyond that further still. This is Science.

So, how does Astrology work?

How can planets millions of miles away have any affect on us?

The planets revolve around the Sun in roughly circular orbits and all travel at different speeds. Mars takes about 687 days and Pluto approximately 248 years to complete an entire orbit. At the same time the Sun is also on the move as the entire solar system revolves around the centre of the Milky Way.

The Moon governs our tides. Our physical bodies contain a large percentage of water and the same influence from the Moon that pulls on our tides, pulls on us as well.

We can measure how strongly we are affected by the Moon by the way we emotionally react and respond.

The Moon moves quickly and likewise our moods can change fast too. We can get much information on how these planets affect and influence us by studying our astrological birth-chart. A birth-chart will also show us how much fire (enthusiasm), water (sensitivity), earth (stability) and air (intellect) we have, and help us to understand where we may need to balance these energies within.

Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun and is known as the Messenger. Mercury’s fast movement can be aligned to our ability to think and adapt to changing circumstances.

The outer planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move much slower and are known as generational planets because their impact affects whole generations of people born within a particular time span.

Whereas the Moon moves rapidly, the same distance the Sun appears to move in a month can take Saturn up to two and a half years to complete.

The planets also appear to move backwards as well as forwards and there are periods of time when they are classed as stationary. Saturn can remain in a motionless state for up to 8 weeks.

This is why there is great excitement when a slow moving planet moves into a different zodiac sign with astrologers wanting to share their predictions on the impact the planet will possibly have on us.

When we are born the position of the planets at the exact time of our birth are recorded within a birth-chart. This information can be used to interpret areas of ease or potential difficulty the individual may face during their life-time. Recognising our strengths and weaknesses can be extremely useful to help us on our journey through life. No birth-chart is set in concrete, the idea is to change negative patterns and step out of our chart rather than be bound by them.

So, if you can understand how and why the Moon affects us as well as the Earth’s tides then try and expand that line of thought and recognise that even though the planets are a very long way from us, the ripple effects of their energy do, eventually reach us and its through Astrology that we can get to Know Thyself.

But there is so much more to Astrology than just the gravitational pull - that’s only one very simple way of understanding how the planets can affect us. As everything moves in the universe so the planets form configurations and are positioned in certain ways that consistently bring about the same sort of results. Are these patterns just coincidence? Man is composed of the same energy that exists in the universe so can we so easily detach ourselves from the planets and dismiss their alignments and patterns as meaningless?

Scientists, mathematicians and physicists are all still exploring the source of Creation. Why, against all the odds, are we here? Some of the greatest minds in history studied Astrology - now, why would they have done that if it was all mumbo jumbo? And remember, Galileo was persecuted when he said Earth was not the centre of the Universe.

There is always a Bigger Picture - we just have to be willing to see it
