One question we are continually asked is: What does it mean to study the Tree of Life and Qabalah (Kabbalah)? For me, personally, it has been life-changing. The more I learnt, the more I realised how little I knew, and the more motivated I became to understand more about myself and the part I had to play in the grand scheme of things – the bigger picture. There is a bigger picture. There is so much more than just this material plane we live on and so much more for us to experience other than acquiring possessions and marking out our territory. The Qabalah taught me to be less subjective and more objective. Less focused on me, and more aware of others. I found studying the Qabalah takes a lot of hard work, dedication and commitment. The Qabalah is for everyone, but not everyone, I feel, is ready for the Qabalah. To study the Qabalah you need to be at a stage in your life when you are ready to take a look not only at yourself but also the life you are leading and to accept that the only person that can make a difference to your life - is you. The journey of the Tree of Life is very exciting but its also hard work; enlightenment cannot be given to you – you have to work for it and work hard but it’s not working hard in the way that you might think, you will be working on yourselves because the key thing in the Qabalah is Know Thyself. The Journey begins with you making a commitment to yourself, as a personality, to get to Know Thyself. It’s not about doing loads of meditating and blowing your head off with visions, it’s about a journey of self-discovery. The reason it's exciting is because you may find yourselves driven to look at life in a completely different way. There are likely to be times of tremendous highs and times when you may feel quite low because maybe you’re discovering things that you don’t like about yourself or struggling to come to terms with who you really are, and your reactions in certain situations. The phases of tremendous highs are where you discover that the process actually works and your life starts taking on a face that you want and enjoy. For me, I learnt how to switch off my personality mind and to make time to step out of my day-to-day life and contemplate; I gave myself time to consider things before I made decisions and stopped reacting so much in ways that did not work or result in the desired outcome. The whole thing about the Qabalah is to improve your life but in order to do that, you need to know where the hazards are, so half of your time is discovering where your Achilles heel is. In other words, looking at what brings you down and considering whether the way you react in certain situations and with certain people works for you or not. If your reactions don't work for you and bring you what it is you want then looking at how you can change that. Many people feel strongly that they have a certain function to perform in this lifetime – they do. We all do. There are many called but few are chosen To become a Qabalist requires dedication and commitment. The aim is to teach others by example but before we can rush out to help others, we have to help ourselves first. This takes time and patience. The Qabalah is first and foremost about being and knowing yourself. So that means being yourself at all times. There is no place within the Qabalah for lip service. Talking about what you want to do or be is a good start but it needs to be backed up with action. Enlightenment has to be worked towards – thinking you already know it all or don’t have to do anything other than just 'Be' is a misconception. Enlightenment comes at a price and the cost is not just on the monetary level, it’s on all levels: physical, emotional, mental etc. and if you count the cost then maybe you don’t want it enough. To fully embrace the Qabalah means to change your life forever. Only you can change your life and you have to ask yourself if you have a Will that is strong enough and focused enough to succeed. The Qabalah helps you to recognise what is happening to you and how to walk in time with the natural flow of the universe, and to go with the tide rather than be dragged along by it; if you continually try to battle against the tide you will simply run out of energy.
